Based on the famous children’s book by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, Rachel Portman’s first opera The Little Prince is brought to the stage by director Francesca Zambello and the Tony Award winning designer Maria Bjørnson, whose whimsical sets and costumes evoke a cornucopia of delight. Smiling faces pop out of nowhere, singers climb and slide and dance about with ease, all the while arranged as if they were so many flowers in a vase. Lighting designer Rick Fisher bathes the set in delicious sunsets and twilights and blazing afternoons, creating a rich and subtle world.

The Little Prince premiered at the Houston Grand Opera House in May 2003 to rave reviews. It has since appeared on stages throughout the United States including the New York City Opera and Boston Lyric Opera and was broadcast on the PBS television series, Great Performances. In November 2004, the BBC premiered a film version of the opera, which was released on DVD and CD by Sony Classical Music.
