Representation: Publishing The modern Brazilian group Uakti (pronounced wah-ke-chee) has been praised for it’s fearless fusion of wide-ranging musical styles, from classical to new world music. The exciting and unique ensemble takes their name from an Amazon legend: Uakti was a huge creature with holes all over his body, and whenever he ran through the forest, the wind passing through his body made wonderful and intriguing sounds. Like the legendary creature, Uakti makes unbelievable sounds. The magic of their music starts with the construction of their own exotic instruments using everyday materials: pipe, glasses. metal, rocks, rubber, and even water. For Uakti, anything can be used to make music. In 1993 Uakti collaborated with Philip Glass to create a dance score for the ballet company Grupo Corpo in Belo Horizonte called 12 pieces for Ballet. Later they arranged these compositions and renamed them for the 1999 release Aguas de Amazona. |
